This renowned school is uniquely positioned on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and enjoys an excellent reputation for sporting success. The project brief was to construct a flexible multi-use 4-court sports hall, a separate fitness studio, hospitality facilities with views to the adjacent rugby pitches and a range of ancillary spaces. The exceptionally sensitive context led to a design solution where a curved grass roof emerges from the hillside and minimises the visual impact of the bulky building. Elevations of vernacular stone and natural timber combine with areas of glazed curtain walling to further root the building into the landscape while ensuring it remains contemporary in its language. SPX developed the design for construction and worked closely with sports centre specialists B&E Boys for 12 months on site.
