This Further Education college is a Scope facility and provides personalised learning programmes for disabled young people aged 18 to 25 years. There are residential and day students, with physical impairments or learning difficulties, who are enabled to take responsibility for their own lives. The commission was to explore strategies to allow the college to be re-built across a series of phases whilst remaining fully operational. The project was further complicated by the edge of town site having limited access, mature trees and topographical challenges. The successful solution created a prominent new college building, four residential ‘finger’ blocks built into the hillside, a safe and secure green courtyard, a clearly defined vehicular zone and a separate pedestrian entrance.
